Tottenham Hotspur vs West Ham United stats: key insights

  • Opta Supercomputer predicts Tottenham Hotspur to top the table, with the hosts winning at 55.4% in their pre-match simulation.
  • West Ham United have not beaten Tottenham Hotspur in back to back league games since 1966.
  • Brennan Johnson has scored in his last six games for Tottenham.

Angel Postecoglou is desperate to see Tottenham Hotspur respond when they host West Ham United earlier in the Premier League on Saturday.

Tottenham may need an international day to recover from the humiliation of their last away game against Brighton, which they lost 3-2 after taking a two-goal lead, with Postecoglou furious at the "worst defeat" of his tenure so far.

Georginio Rutter led an inspired turnaround for Fabian Hürzeler's side, helped by Tottenham's poor defense, and Brennan Johnson scored again for Spurs.

The Welsh winger has scored in his last six games for Tottenham - a feat last achieved by Harry Kane - and those six goals are one more than Johnson's previous 38 appearances for the club.

James Maddison also stumbled and missed a shot off Bart Verbruggen for his second goal in three league games. His next goal would be his 50th in the competition.

However, despite the fluency and attacking prowess of the first half, Spurs finished the weekend in ninth place in the league, a position that may not improve here given their form against other London clubs.

Postecoglou's side have lost four of their last six Premier League games against their capital rivals (W1 D1), as many headers as they had in their previous 16 (W9 D3). However, they were given a big boost as Son was available to play again after missing Tottenham's final three games through injury.

In stark contrast, West Ham United are unbeaten in their last three Premier League away London derbies (W1 D2), against Crystal Palace, Fulham and Brentford - their longest unbeaten run since January-December 1999 when they played six consecutive games.

That record could be unsettling for some worried West Ham United fans, with pressure seemingly mounting on Julen Lopetegui ahead of his 4-1 thrashing of Ipswich Town before the international break.

Michail Antonio, Mohamed Koudous, Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta all scored in the game, but the challenge now is to build on that performance, having not won back-to-back league games since March.

Antonio took less than a minute to score against Ipswich and will fancy his chances again on Saturday, having scored six goals against Tottenham Hotspur, more than he has scored against any other Premier League opponent. Five of those six goals were the first goals of the game, and only Giggs has scored more first goals against Spurs in Premier League history (six).

Lopetegui will be relying on Antonio to lead the line, although Bowen's impact cannot be ignored. He has been involved in 33 opening shots this season, more than any other West Ham United player this season.

In the win over Ipswich, Bowen also became the first West Ham player since Antonio (against Arsenal in March 2021) to have 5+ shots and create 5+ chances in a single Premier League game.

Tottenham Hotspur vs West Ham United Head to Head

Postecoglou could hardly have asked for a better schedule to get his side back on track, with Tottenham's Premier League victories against Everton (31) and Manchester City (28) only outnumbering their 26 against West Ham United.

West Ham United did come back to win 2-1 last season, but Bowen and James Ward-Prowse scored shortly after Christian Romero's opener.

However, Spurs have not lost consecutive home games to West Ham United in the league since April and November 1966, although another record could go in their favor on Saturday.

Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United have not won any of their seven consecutive Premier League meetings since International Day (L4 D3).

Tottenham Hotspur vs West Ham United Predictions

The Opta supercomputer was hard pressed to see anything other than a Tottenham win, with the home side posting an emphatic 55.4% victory in 10,000 pre-match simulations.

West Ham United had a rare back-to-back win over their London rivals, while the same data-driven simulation game was only 21.61 TP3T. draws were slightly more frequent at 23.01 TP3T.

Tottenham Hotspur's collapse at Brighton caused their chances of finishing in the top four in Opta's end-of-season predictions to fall to 15.4%, while West Ham United finished the season in 12th place the most times, doing so at 13.4% in the simulation.
