Arsenal vs Leicester City stats: key insights
- Opta supercomputerMaking Arsenal the favorites here, the Gunners won a whopping 75.9% in pre-match simulations.
- Since losing 1-0 to Newcastle in November 2010, Arsenal have not lost at home to a promoted team in 39 such games (W34 D5).
- Bukayo Saka could become the first player ever to assist a goal in each of his team's first six Premier League games this season.
Arsenal may not want to play another 'Man City' side again soon after their last disappointing finish. Mikel Arteta's side resolutely defended their 2-1 lead at City, although they were at a disadvantage until injury time when John Stones equalized for the home side.
A point for Manchester City was perfectly respectable in the cold sunshine, but Arsenal will be looking to get all three points when they host Leicester City at the Emirates on Saturday.
Arteta also has reason to be optimistic. Arsenal have won 16 of their last 17 Premier League matches against promoted teams, with the lone exception being a 1-0 loss away to Nottingham Forest in May 2023, a game that ultimately won Manchester City the title that season. At home, the Gunners are unbeaten in 39 such games (W34 D5) since November 2010, when they lost 1-0 to Newcastle United.
For the first time in England's men's top flight, as many as six teams are without a win after five league games, one of them being Leicester City with three draws and two defeats. The only other time the Foxes started a Premier League season without a win in six matches was in the 2022-23 season, when they were eventually relegated.
We can probably expect goals in this game, especially considering Leicester City have scored and conceded in all five of their Premier League matches this season - only in their title-winning 2015-16 season did they have a longer scoring record from the start of the season (the first nine).
Since Arsenal's draw with Manchester City, there has been a lot of talk about Arsenal's so-called "black magic". The Gunners have received six cards (four yellows and two second yellows) for time wasting or non-return in the Premier League this season, two more than any other club. They last received three such cards against Manchester City.
Despite Leandro Trossard's red card at the Etihad Stadium, the Gunners will be able to welcome him back after the Belgian was suspended for one game in Wednesday's 5-1 EFL Cup win over Bolton Wanderers.
Sterling made his full Arsenal debut against the League One side in midweek, scoring a goal and dishing out an assist, and he may fancy his chances of scoring again on Saturday, having scored twice in his last two Premier League games against Leicester City - one at Manchester City (December 2021) and the other at Chelsea (August 2022, his first goal for the club). Only three players have scored multiple goals against opponents in Premier League matches for three different clubs - Robbie Fowler vs Bolton (Liverpool, Leeds United, Manchester City), Darren Bent vs Bolton (Charlton, Tottenham Hotspur, Sunderland) and Andrew Cole vs West Ham United (Newcastle, Manchester United, Manchester City ).
Surprisingly, Bukayo Saka played 71 minutes against Bolton, but he is likely to start again against Leicester City, where he will hope to deliver another assist. The England international has more assists this season than any other player in the Premier League (5) and could become the first player ever to assist a goal in each of his team's first six games of the season.
Leicester City struggled to beat Walsall in their midweek EFL Cup tie, having to rely on penalties to beat their League Two rivals after a 0-0 draw. Head coach Steve Cooper found himself under early pressure in the Leicester City coaching box, but it will be a big ask to turn things around at in-form Arsenal, who will be hoping to put last week's late disappointment behind them.
Arsenal vs Leicester City Head to Head
Arsenal have won their last five Premier League matches against Leicester City, their longest winning streak against them in league history (they also won five between 1908 and 1914 and 1930 and 1932).
Leicester City will certainly have their work cut out for them at the Emirates, having won just one of their last 26 away league games against Arsenal (D4 L21), with their only win in that period coming in October 2020 in a 1-0 victory.
Their last meeting at the Emirates Stadium in August 2022 saw Arsenal win 4-2 with Gabriel Jesus scoring twice before Granit Xhaka and Gabriel Martinelli scored for the home side. Their last meeting was at the King Power Stadium in February 2023, when Martinelli scored the only goal of the game in the Gunners' 1-0 win.
