Manchester United continue to take one step forward and one step back under Ruben Amorim as they prepare to face Wolves away on Thursday.
United have won more games (22) and scored more goals (74) on Boxing Day than any other team in the history of the Premier League, and there should be plenty of festive cheer.
However, there were no such celebrations on Sunday as Amorim's side lost 0-3 at home to high-flying Bournemouth. United's defensive problems were exposed after a 4-3 loss to Tottenham in the EFL Cup.
However, those two games were in stark contrast to the 2-1 thrashing of arch-rivals Manchester City. Amad Diallo inspired a remarkable comeback at the Etihad Stadium, although that victory seems to be a distant memory as people are upset by Bournemouth's humiliation.
The loss to Andoni Iraola's side leaves United 13th in the league and in the bottom half of the table at Christmas for the first time since the 1989-90 season.
United remain in with a chance of securing back-to-back away league wins (three in a row) at Molineux for the first time since February. They are also unbeaten in their last six Premier League games on Boxing Day (W4 D2) since losing 0-2 to Stoke City in 2015.
Defensive issues continue to be a major problem for Amorim. Overall, United have conceded 17 Premier League goals from set-pieces (excluding penalties) in 2024 - their most in a single calendar year in the Premier League.
The absence of Mathis de Ligt, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw through injury will add to those defensive woes. Mason Mount was the other United player to miss out on Thursday with a long-term thigh injury.
Marcus Rashford has been left out of the last three matchday squads with Amorim keen to make his claim. However, the England striker may wish to be included here as he has scored three goals in the Premier League against Wolves. All three goals gave United a 1-0 lead (December 2020, December 2022 and February 2024).
Hosts Wolverhampton Wanderers beat Leicester City 3-0 in Gary O'Neil's first game in charge since his sacking to move to within two points of safety. Gonzalo Guedes, Rodrigo Gomez and Matheus Cunha all scored at the King Power Stadium on Sunday.
Cunha has also been involved in 13 goals in his last 17 Premier League games at the Molineux Stadium (six goals, seven assists), although he was banned by the FA for alleged violent conduct after the full-time whistle blew against Ipswich Town.
The Brazilian striker is a sore miss for any team, especially Pereira's, although Gedes' performance against Leicester City suggests that Wolves should be preparing for partner Jorgen Strand-Larsson up front.
Rayan Aït-Nouri will also be back after a one-match suspension on Boxing Day, while Mario Lemina should shake off a muscle problem. The game comes too early for Pablo Sarabia, Boubacar Traore, Sasa Karadzic and Jersen Mosquera.
Wolves vs Man Utd Head-to-Head
This will be the fifth Boxing Day meeting between Wolverhampton Wanderers (W2) and Manchester United (W1), but the first since 1969, a goalless draw in the top flight.
United have won seven of their last eight Premier League meetings with Wolves, with the other loss coming in January 2022 at Old Trafford.
There was chaos in the final stages of this game last season. United led 3-0 until the 71st minute when Pedro Neto equalized in the fifth minute of injury time and thought he had completed the comeback. However, Kobbie Mainoo scored two minutes later to make it 4-3.
This late win means that United have won their last four Premier League games, having won just two of their first six visits to the Molineux Stadium (D1 L3).
